So who can apply for the Canada Job Grant Program?

Those who may be eligible for the job grant program include any small business in Canada (profit or non profit) that has a plan to train Canadians and prepare them for a new job or a better job.

As an small business owner, hiring employees, you are the one that is able to identify the skills and requirements which your business needs and in which area of your business you must have the right skills to ensure the best successful candidate. The Canada Job Grant offers the funding towards the cost of training that is provided by eligible 3rd party trainers. The funding for the training would be split between the Canadian government and the small business owners.

The potential is there, as the Canadian government could be able to provide 2/3 of the training required. The funding provided is up to a maximum of $10,000 per grant provided. The small business owners would be on the hook for the remaining 1/3rd of the training costs for their employees.

Those small business owners with fewer than 50 employees could also benefit from the program though flexible arrangements such as the potential to count the employee wages as part of their employee contributions.

Let’s take a look at an example of how the job grant could work:

A Toronto based trucking company is hiring for new truck drivers for their operation. John, a Toronto truck drivers who drove smaller trucks applied for the position, however in order to be able to jump in the big rigs, the would need to get trained. The cost of the training for John to learn the skills he requires is $2,000. The Toronto based trucking company applies and obtains the Canada Job Grant for $1,000, and the remainder will be paid by the company, which is a $1,000. John gets the training for his new job, and the Toronto trucking company gets the perfectly trained employee with the exact skills needed.

What type of training is provided?

Training covered can take place in a number of different settings such as a school, workplace or even on the web. The Canada Job Grant can provide the necessary training to help individuals improve and obtain new skills in the areas of truck and transportation mechanics, carpentry, computer science, engineering and many more. Contact your local government to find out if you may be eligible for the job grant.

The Canada Job Grant may be able to support training costs for tuition fees charged by the certified trainers, to pay for mandatory student fees, textbooks, software and other required materials.
