Announced today, the Canadian government is providing $12 million in government funding for Loblaws grocery store to help them install lower emission refrigeration systems in 370 stores across Canada.
While the government funding is welcomes by the Loblaws Companies Ltd, many Canadians are question why the public dollars are being used towards such a large and already way profitable company.
With so many Canadian small business owners struggling to make ends meet, government funding (grants and loans) would have been a very welcome incentive for these small business owners to take advantage to help grow the economy and boost employment across Canada. Which is a major cause for the public outrage.
In defense, Loblaws says that the new system will help reduce the overall carbon footprint by 23 per cent across its’s 370 stores.
The government funding for Loblaws is coming from a $450 million federal fund which is designed to help businesses, not for profit groups and low tiers government cut their emission levels.
With the government funding news, the public out cry is seen as a largely negative reaction through social media with many individuals questioning the government money being provided to a company which reported over $200 million in profit in the last quarter of 2018.
